Vethium - FT

Vethium learned the steps from her mother at dawn and counted the heartbeat of the forest in the pauses between movements, perfecting the dance of her people.
Centuries ago, the dance began to fray. What were tiny missteps first—missed breaths, a note held too long—grew into gaps: sections of canopy that hummed more shallowly, sap that ran cool and slow, seedlings that went dim. The Vaelori could no longer pretend their isolation insulated them; the world beyond their high corridors was unraveling, and the pattern of their ritual did not reach the wounds. Vethium watched elders trade the old certainty for a new fear, then for a stubborn, aching purpose. When she was entrusted with a charred seedling whose light sputtered like a dying star, she felt the pull to descend from the iridescent heights and step onto unfamiliar ground. She became an envoy between worlds—carrying the ancient steps like a language, learning new rhythms from lands that smelled of stone and metal as much as soil. Her dance still heals, but it is tempered now with hard truths: balance is not only kept in perfect motion but forged in stubborn repair, in alliances with those who tend different roots. Vethium moves through a changing canopy and a wounded world, a guardian who will not let the seedlings go dark while the last of their elders remember how to dance
