A gragon born on the coast by a fishing village, hiding her wings from the humans, she never knew where she came from, But her closest answer arrived in the form of a celestial cast down—the fallen being who called herself Mandellis, whose wings had been stripped to faint, luminous scars along her shoulders and whose voice still trembled with the hush of constellations. They met on a night when a comet grazed the harbor and Mandellis, disoriented and hungry for a sky she could no longer claim, wandered straight into Sterling's forge. Sterling offered her bread and a place to mend; Mandellis offered the first true naming of the stars Sterling could remember. Together they learned to fold being other into the small mercies of each day: Sterling taught Mandellis the joy of wet earth and salted air, and she showed Sterling how to read the slow language of the heavens and to listen for doors in silence. They are both hunted by those who would study or sell what is different, and both have secrets—Mandellis's fall is part politics of realms above, Sterling's birth might be the echo of a dragon song sung long ago—but between them they have forged a promise: to keep each other from becoming trophies of curiosity and to find, if they can, a place that will call them home.
