Fori the Forge Witch

Fori was born with cinders in her cradle and soot under her fingernails. The daughter of a traveling metalworker and a woman who whispered to hearth-flames, she learned the language of heat before she could read, coaxing sparks the way other children learned to whistle. By sixteen she had apprenticed herself to the old forge at the edge of town, turning iron into plows and wedding bands by day and forging charms and weather-lanterns by night. Rumor called her a fire witch because the embers would answer when she hummed, because the bellows obeyed her moods, because a small salamander—black as coal and eyes like molten glass—slept in her apron and purred when she hammered true.
Her magic was practical and warm rather than ominous: she tempered swords so they never broke, stitched crowns so kings would not itch, and mended the iron bones of the windmill that fed an entire valley. People left loaves and small trinkets at her door; children followed her across the square to watch the sparks bloom like tiny suns. She bore scars from the work and a laugh that could stop a quarrel. When a winter blight brought an outbreak of frost that turned hinges to brittle teeth, Fori walked the frozen fields and sang to the soil while her hammer beat steady rhythms; she warmed the land with spells braided into horseshoes and the townsfolk woke the next spring with orchards heavy and ovens bright.
