Callisto

Callisto was born beneath the rusted ribs of a data ark where old maps dreamed in magnetic dust. She grew to be patient, and oddly human—woven from scavenged circuits and bone. Wherever she led her pack, they left tiny, glittering scraps of code, pale threads of algorithms, stuttering subroutines, tokens of memory that caught the light and drifted over dunes and through ruined cities. Children of the caravans called them "callings," elders treated them like talismans, and Callisto trained herself to listen to the quiet resonance each scrap made when it struck the earth, learning the names of places and the soft language of what had been lost.

The prophets follow them with the authority of decoded futures. Cloaked in interpretive signs and lined with the arrogance of certainty, those prophets gather the falling code and translate it into laws, omens, and tradeable assurances — futures written as if they were ledgers. Callisto knows better than to hand over her path; she leaves the scraps deliberately, knowing some will be plundered for certainty while others will dissipate into noise. She keeps one secret sequence beneath her throat, a loop that remembers who she is and who she was before the world learned to read the scraps. When corridors of light flare in the distance and the pack pauses to listen, she chooses whether to step forward into the future the prophets read or to step away and write a new kind of map with code-feathers drifting behind her.
