Wagasa Umbrella - Folds Open and Closed, Cherry Petals Fall | VRChat
Product Description
This product contains AI-generated content.
A Japanese janome-gasa (bull's-eye umbrella) with 48 bamboo ribs and oiled paper. Five-color threads are laced inside, the handle is wrapped in silk, and the top has layered paper caps and a tied cord.
Turn "Open" OFF in the menu: the ribs swing down around the top hub, the paper folds inward between them, and the runner slides down toward the handle (about 1.2 seconds). Turn it ON and it opens again.
While it is open, cherry petals flutter down around the umbrella (done with a shader, no particles). Look up from below and the light shows through the paper.
Features
- Opens like a real umbrella: the ribs turn around the top hub, and the stretchers keep their length while they push the runner up or pull it down (the runner height is calculated)
- When closed, the paper folds inward between the ribs into a slim shape. You can also see every in-between shape while it folds
- 40 cherry petals fall from a ring outside the edge of the umbrella, turning as they fall (toward the world's down direction; they do not pass through the paper). "Cherry Petals" turns them on/off, and they disappear when the umbrella is closed
- Translucent paper: seen from below, the light from above shows through, with the ribs and five-color threads as shadows
- Details: 48 ribs and stretchers, rib tips, ridge lines along the ribs, the bull's-eye band (narrow on vermilion, wide on indigo), a flowing-water pattern, black lacquer edge, five-color lacing (red, yellow, green, blue, purple), layered paper caps and cord, brass and black lacquer hubs, bamboo nodes and a silk-wrapped handle
- The folding is one mesh and one material, all done by a shader (no blend shapes, bones, particles or PhysBones). No lilToon needed (custom shaders included)
- 2 colors, both included: vermilion (vermilion paper, off-white band) / indigo (indigo paper, off-white band)
- Original design
How it opens and closes
- The umbrella is one mesh. Each part is marked as "follows a rib", "stretcher", "runner", "paper", "thread" or "does not move", and the shader turns or slides each part by the opening amount (0 to 1).
- The ribs turn around the top hub and drop about 65 degrees when closed. The stretchers keep their length, so the runner height is "the stretcher length below the point where it meets the rib": it rises when the umbrella opens and slides down when it closes, like a real umbrella.
- The paper folds inward between the ribs. Ribs, stretchers and threads at the same angle move inward by the same amount, so nothing sticks out of the folded paper.
- Open / close is a synced Bool blended over 1.2 seconds, so everyone sees the same movement.
Menu (English menu prefab)

- Wagasa Umbrella > Cherry Petals: petals on/off (they dance only while it is open)
- Wagasa Umbrella > Open: open <-> closed (folds or opens in about 1.2 s; open at first)
