The M18 Smoke Grenade was developed to replace the M16 in 1942 with the original four colors of green, yellow, red, and violet. The M18 produces a cloud of smoke for around 50 to 90 seconds once ignited. The M18 was used during numerous conflicts including World War 2, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, War in Afghanistan (2001-2021), and the Russo-Ukrainian War. During the Vietnam War, red often signaled danger while yellow and violet signaled pickup zones or friendly force locations with exact color coding dependent on the unit. Overall, roughly 3.9 million M18 Smoke grenades have been produced by the Pine Bluff Arsenal since its introduction in World War 2. Despite being deemed obsolete in the early 1990s, the M18 is still produced today with only occasional design changes since its invention in 1942.
